Is Gossip Girl What Teens Really Want?

Story is here.

First, on the marketing angle, Gossip Girl's producers had it absolutely right. Remember how many records these so-called parents groups sold for heavy metal and rap groups in the 1980's? Same thing.

Secondly, the concept of "buzz spotters." Ugh! God, I hate crap like that. This is empty buzzword twaddle coming from out of touch 30 something advertising or women's magazine types who get laughed at by teenagers behind their backs. I would suggest that self-appointed youth culture experts just, as the Pink Floyd song suggests, leave them kids alone!

Thirdly, what Gossip Girl apparently portrays, though I haven't seen it, does, in fact occur everywhere in America (albeit without the upper class accoutrements). Kids using drugs, having sex with each other (even in cars---I've done that myself), partying 'til they puke, getting into fist fights and worse, I saw all that back in the 1970's in my own neighborhood and I'm sure it is happening now. Don't be so shocked. Same stuff, different decade.
