One Reason Race May Not Derail Obama: The 'Do the Right Thing' Effect

"It's different," John Turturro's Pino Frangione insists. "Magic, Eddie, Prince are not niggers...They're not really black. They're black but they're not really black. They're more than black. To me, it's different."

Spike kinda blew that, actually. It's not that Magic, et al are "more than black," for some people, it is that they are ENTERTAINMENT, which gives a certain kind of white person permission to either laugh at blacks or to vicariously have blacks work for them while being free to slam them without social reprobation if they don't deliver on the court, etc.

The problem for some white people about Obama is that he has stepped outside the socially and culturally approved envelope they cubbyhole blacks into (there's a badly formed metaphor for you). Since many whites don't know black folks socially, it is scary for them to see one in a position of authority when they have never had a black boss or perhaps even coworkers.

And the GOP has been playing up the fear angle non-stop since 9/11, supplying the American public with more ready made terror than Osama Bin Laden. So anyone who doesn't see the McCain campaign as a racist carnival is in denial. No matter how much of a victory Obama wins, the GOP will see him as a glorified burglar breaking into "their" White House.

Max Blumenthal's Jihad Against Toby Keith Continues

Blumenthal's blue in the face stupid ass rant is here.

Blumenthal is also a chicken shit, as he has deleted all three posts I have submitted on his spittle flecked ruminations on his antipathy for Keith and his song, Beer for My Horses.

In that post, which I submitted over the past weekend and was too tired to copy and leave here, I accused Blumenthal of giving Keith the full McCarthy (as in Joe, not Eugene) and that he was getting exercised over nothing

I also pointed out that Blumenthal is making a martyr of Keith much as how the publicity that the PMRC gave to heavy metal and rap groups helped those outfits go platinum largely after those records had bombed commercially (2Live Crew and Ice T.'s Body Count come immediately to mind) and was thus actually making progressives look like a bunch of irrational politically correct zealots with no sense of proportion.

I further added that Keith's tune reflected a weariness with crime in the U.S. among working class whites and that Democrats had better hear that message or suffer the consequences.

Just to reiterate, I think Keith is a knuckle dragging dipshit. But the stuff he has said in both this song as well as in statements after this controversy flared up are emblematic of the thinking of millions of southern whites in America and it does Democrats no good to talk down to them. Rather, progressives have to tailor their message to persuade that bloc to see our side of things rather than just engage in knee jerk condemnations.

Keith's purported remark to Beck was stupid, but I don't think that he intended anything racist in it. The fact of the matter is, and keep in mind I am a card carrying ACLU loving liberal, that blacks do often make distinctions about which of their number is "really black" and who "acts white." In some inner city circles, really stupid ones, getting a college education is seen as "trying to act white." There is even debate within the black community as to the desirability of light skinned blacks vs. darker hued folks.

So these anti-Keith diatribes by Blumenthal, which are reminding me of the whining Heather Mills engaged in during her divorce proceedings with Paul McCartney, are getting to the point of a neurotic obsession.

Geez, I can't believe that I am defending a cretin like Keith. But Blumenthal is just being totally unfair here because he is apparently pc to the point ot being delusional.
